2024 Mid-Year Review
Did Viz Extensions made us rich?
Hi!
As you read in the title, with August starting today, it is time to share some mid-year achievements. We have had big goals since, and with the recent launch of Viz Extensions, I’d like to share with you some numbers!
But before that, you should know that we are taking a break for the next three weeks. We will spend a bit more time with our family and focus on building new stuff. We’ll be back on the 28th!
As I explained in our 2024 plan, our primary goal for this year is to thrive: to improve on everything we built in previous years. For this newsletter to make sense, read our 2023 Review and plans for 2024.
We will split this email into two parts:
Mid-Year Review and where we stand for our 2024 goals.
Plan for the end of the year.
2024 Mid-Year Review
Goals
We had five main goals:
Completely redesign our website ✅
Thanks to Connor, we have a brand new website. It will still evolve as I add pages for the specific products, but it’s a significant improvement over the old one!Send at least two newsletters per month ✅
Nineteen emails since the beginning of the year.Publish at least one video per month on YouTube ❌
Only one video has been published so far.Create four new products 🤷♂️
More about that in the plan below.Increase the % of revenue from products ✅
More about that in the Products section below.
Now that I read this again, the last point does not make much sense. We could “easily” increase the % of product revenue by not accepting more client work, which does not mean we have improved. Let’s change that to simply increase the Revenue coming from products.
So far, we are on track! Let’s get into more details.
Consulting
Things are going as planned on the consulting side. We have worked with seven clients (four new and three recurring).
Our revenue is more evenly distributed between the clients than last year, which is good.
If we compare the days worked between January and July 2024 vs. 2023, we can see that we worked a bit more days for clients (139 days so far in 2024 vs. 120 last year).
This makes sense, as I worked alone during that period last year (Jessica only joined in September), so the number of days spent working for clients could have been much higher.
However, we decided to focus more on products this year, so how did we do on that side?
Products
We currently have three products that we are selling in our store.
BANg - $59.
Generate KPI cards in Tableau in minutes instead of hours.
Launched in July 2023.Figma to Tableau Plugin - $149 / year
Automatically convert all your Figma designs into Tableau dashboards.
Launched in November 2023.
There was a big update in June 2024 with the launch of the Dashboard Generator.Viz Extensions - $80 (or $10 per individual extension)
Generate advanced visualizations directly inside Tableau.
Launched in July 2024.
In 2023, the products represented 2% of our revenue for a total of 3 478€.
In 2024, the products represent 14% of our revenue for a total of 20 393€.
More interestingly, the monthly average of our product revenue in 2024 is 2913€, making it a sustainable revenue stream for one of us.
May 2024 was a great month, thanks to many highlights during the Tableau Conference!
Seeing this makes us confident enough to continue working on our products. We receive great feedback; it improves our consulting work and helps many of you simultaneously.
Content
Content continues to be an essential part of our activity. We like to share our process, advice, tools, and journey.
Recently, we reached 2000 subscribers to this newsletter. We have sent 19 emails (including this one) since the beginning of the year.
On the other hand, we are doing a worse job on YouTube than last year. This is primarily due to us working from different places very often this year (if you’ve been following this newsletter, you have noticed that we are rarely home).
However, even with only one video published, the channel continues to grow (+666 subscribers so far this year 🤘). I like creating videos, and people like them, so I need to focus on this someday!
Finally, we continue participating in the User Group or collaborating with others on videos. Here is what we have done so far:
Comunidatos DataDev Sepecial in Spanish 🇪🇸
Beyond the Boundaries of Tableau at Tableau Conference 24
Three videos with TableauTim about Figma to Tableau, Viz Extensions, and becoming a DataDev
French TUG #10 in French 🇫🇷
Brazil TUG #23 in Spanish 🇪🇸
Finishing the year
One of the main goals that we still need to achieve is releasing two more new products this year. Of the four planned, Viz Extensions is the biggest one, and we will continue improving it with new chart types.
I also count the Dashboard Generator for the Figma to Tableau Plugin as a new product. It is currently in beta, and I want to finalize it before September.
One of the other projects I want to focus on is Filters in Tableau. They annoy me way too much at this point. Finally, we had the idea of combining Figma and AdvViz to generate charts directly in Figma. Let’s see where this goes!
Content-wise, we will be back sending (almost) weekly emails starting Thursday, August 29th. We will also release at least one other YouTube video focused on the Viz Extensions.
Finally, we hope to see many of you at DataFam Europe in London in November!
That is it for today!
Of course, we will continue to share smaller news on LinkedIn and Twitter during that time.
Enjoy August 🌊🏄🏻♂️☀️🐟
