New Line Chart Extension

And important updates for all extensions!

Hi everyone!

The last two weeks were really productive, and we are happy to release a new extension and many great updates to existing ones!

The new extension is Line Chart! It lets you use nice curves and gradients without any hacks or calculations to make your trends and evolution look modern!

While working on the new extension, we also made many improvements to the axes. So if you are using Beeswarms, Bump Charts, or Streamgraphs, you’ll also get these new features!

Finally, we improved the Color Picker on Desktop and added an option to set your default chart color!

Let’s dig in!

Better Line Chart

After building some extensions that create brand-new types of charts that couldn’t exist in Tableau, like the Globe path, we decided to improve a simple chart: Line.

You can build simple line charts in Tableau from the beginning, but they lack styles and customization options to make them look modern.

That’s what this extension fixes!

The default rendering of our Line extension features a nice curve with a gradient. It looks modern and integrates super easily into any dashboard.

You can add multiple values to add more lines and, in the format extension window, you can configure each line with its own style.

You can also, of course, use the Color Mark to split your line by color.

As always, we added many configuration options to adjust the line, marker, and label style.

The extension is now available on your website and will soon be available on Tableau Exchange.

If you have the Viz Extension pack, this new Extension is included with your license at no additional cost. Just enter your license key, and get the new trex!

Smoothing lines can sometimes lead to data misrepresentation. You can add the markers to show the actual data points.

Give it a try and let us know what you’d like us to improve!

Viz Extensions important updates

Better Axes

While working on the Line Chart extension, we noticed that our axes could be improved. Starting now, all extensions using an X or Y axis will have:

  • Better date handling (the ticks should now correctly start at the beginning of the period)

  • New option to show and configure Grid lines

  • New option to show and configure Zero Line

  • New option to start the axis at zero or not (for numeric axis)

  • Different color options for the text and the axis line

  • Better default color closer to Tableau’s look and feel

Color Picker and Default chart color

We now use a JavaScript color picker library in Tableau Desktop instead of the default system one, which was really not practical to use (at least on Mac).

Finally, we added a new option in the trex file that lets you specify the default chart color when using the extension.

This new option is directly available in the trex file by adding &defaultColor= followed by your color after your license key.

Once configured, all your extensions will render your chart with your default color automatically.

We hope you enjoy these updates!

Thanks for staying with us, and stay tuned for our next updates in November!
