New Globe Path Extension!

Hi everyone!

We hope you are having a great summer ☀️

Personally, and we knew this year was going to be tough, we reached the point where we don’t really have a “home” anymore.

As we prepare to move to Spain early next year and leave the Netherlands permanently, we will spend the next few months traveling between France and Mexico to visit our family.

Quite fittingly, our new Viz Extension is perfectly in line with the theme of traveling around the globe.

Please welcome our 16th extension: Globe Path.

Globe Path Extension

Every time you show Tableau to someone for the first time, maps are always a highlight. A simple double click on a geographical field and instantly, a map!

Working with maps was quite new for us, but we wanted to push the limits of what was possible in Tableau and address a common request: displaying paths on a rotating globe.

We tried to make it as simple to use as possible with the available Marks: Source and Target. Drag and drop your Latitude and Longitude in these Marks to automatically display the map and allow you to add sizes and colors to your paths.

More than that, we wanted to add some features that are not typically available in Tableau, such as animations and movements.

In the “Format Extension” window, you can activate movements with a simple click to see the direction of your paths.

It's not extraordinary if you're used to D3 or other web maps, but seeing it in Tableau feels kind of special!

As always, you’ll find many options to configure and format the extension:

  • Move the globe around and zoom in and out!

  • Change colors (countries, borders, sea, background, paths)

  • Change the sizes of the paths

  • Add a circle to the source or target to easily identify them.

This is a preview release, and the extension is not yet available on the Tableau Exchange, but you can get the TREX file on our website:

If you have the Viz Extension pack, this new Extension is included with your license at no additional cost. Just enter your license key, and get the new trex!

Give it a try and let us know what you’d like us to improve!

Next week, if everything goes to plan, we’ll have some updates about Tableau Public!

Stay tuned!
