Hi everyone!
We're back with a brand new Viz Extension: Area Bump!
This one has been on our list for a while. It seemed like a quick evolution from the Bump chart and Streamgraph, but the way areas work in d3 made it quite challenging!
Finally, you can quickly and easily build Area Bump charts with the new extension. Drop your fields, and get a beautiful, flowing chart that shows how your categories compete and swap positions over time.

Why Area Bump?
Area Bump charts are fantastic for storytelling.
They combine the best of bump charts and area charts: you can follow each category's rank while also seeing relative magnitude.
Here’s an example on Tableau Public from Ludovic Tavernier:
Think market share evolution, sports league standings, or any scenario where you want to show "who's on top" over time.
I find them very elegant and informative, and we can’t wait to see what you’ll build with them.
How it works
Like all our extensions, we tried to keep it as simple as possible. If you used our Streamgraph, it works exactly the same.
Simply drop your date, categories, and values in Marks, and the extension handles ranking, stacking, and smoothing automatically.

In the Format Extension window, you'll find options to configure:
Curve smoothing or linear
Layout (centered or from the bottom)
Padding and opacity
Borders and margin
Stroke and border settings

Get Area Bump Extension
If you have the Viz Extension pack, this new Extension is included with your license at no additional cost. Just enter your license key, and get the new .trex!
If you don’t have a license, you can use it for free on Tableau Desktop.
For Tableau Public, we work with Tableau on a monthly release (the time for them to test and verify our code, and host them as Trusted Extensions). The area bump extension will be availble on Tableau Exchange for Tableau Public early next month.
Give it a try and let us know what you'd like us to improve!
We are always happy to read your feedback!
